When it comes to developing leadership qualities in small business, the biggest problem we see when leading others is that “leaders” is their ego. It gets the best of them.
Why shouldn’t they? There’s normally no one to keep them in check!
Most believe everyone thinks like they do.
That’s simply not the case.
People are motivated, influenced and driven by different factors based on their personality type.
We use a comprehensive, data driven, personality test with each one of our clients to understand who they are and what makes them tick.
The test also shows us what the important communication elements are for each individual, so we can help influence their decision making patterns to get the results they’ve listed as a means to their success.
That’s not just success in business either. It’s success in every realm of their lives.
Leadership is influence. The litmus test is how well do you influence those around you towards the mission at hand.
Ask yourself if that mission is in the interest of the whole group or is it only in the best interest of you?
In either case everyone needs to understand how they benefit from the mission in order to board the ship.
It’s important that you understand and align the mission with their motivating factors to get your desired results.
You can’t do that until you ask the question…
“What do you get out of being a part of our mission?”
In business it’s never a paycheck for employees. This is where a lot of business owners fail in leadership.
What does that paycheck, raise, or opportunity provide employees outside of work?
Dig deeper. Find out the true “why” for each individual. Show them you care about them and you’re there to help accomplish their own mission, and they will help you accomplish yours.
The same questions and rationale applies to every person in your life.
If you’re a leader in your organization and aren’t getting the results you want then it’s time for a different approach.
This is it. I’ve never seen it fail.
The most important part of being a leader and having others follow you is…
How well you lead yourself.
All the best,
