As owners or high level leaders of growing businesses we’ve all felt the pain of hiring and onboarding.
From the challenge of finding top talent skilled in what you are looking for to even setting up, scheduling, and managing the interview process.
We’ve found a lot of success in our companies with having an interview and recruitment process that protects the time of senior management.
- Always be hiring! Recruitment should be an all year long process for growing companies. Think of recruitment like marketing. We don’t market only when we need money. We market all the time! We can’t expect the timing to always be perfect when we are hiring for top talent. You want to make sure you are top of mind for A+ people when they decide it’s time to change companies.
- Write out your “perfect employee” on a piece of paper. Really understand WHO you are hiring. The what is the easy part. Technical skills can be taught and tuned up. Get granular and clear on what values and strengths you want this new hire to have when they get to you. Use this as the lens that you judge your applicants on when setting up second or third interviews.
- Have someone underneath you do a preliminary phone interview and trust them to only set up interviews with people who seem to fit your companies core values and also have a sense of the skills you need them to have to do the job.
- Block “interview days”. Pick a day of the week and block it out for interviews. Have all the applicants set up inside that one or 2 day block. This way, when some people inevitably do not show up, you are not wasting multiple days for no reason. You can get work done and do what you need in the slots that people do not fill, and you can stay in “hiring mode” through the entirety of that day.
I often see business leaders focus so much time on bringing in and handling the work from a technical aspect that they miss the mark on recruitment procedures.
These tips should get you on your way to having a less stressful experience when hiring new team members.
